What is a premium ad?

Premium ads appear above other ads listed in the same category. These ads are placed through the Cracker site; prices start at $20 each but vary depending on category and type of ad. Premium ads run for 28 days.

Premium ads can be placed in any category that allows free ads. Existing free ads can also be upgraded to premium ads for the cost of a premium ad in that category.

Premium ads are displayed according to the date they are published; although your premium ad will appear above the free ads, it may not appear at the very top of the page. The most recent premium ad will be displayed at the top of the page.

What is a paid ad? Paid ads are available in two categories only:

  • Jobs - Trades/technology, Hospitality/tourism, Legal/finance, Sales/realty, Media/PR, Admin & cust serv., Teaching/nursing, Manufacturing/mining
  • Real Estate - all For Sale (residential, office & commercial), all For Rent (residential, office & commercial)
Paid ads cannot be placed through the Cracker website. Real Estate ads can be placed through Domain (www.domain.com.au); employment ads are placed through MyCareer (www.mycareer.com.au). Real Estate and employment ads posted through these sites will be displayed on both MyCareer or Domain and Cracker at no extra cost.

Visit www.mycareer.com.au or www.domain.com.au for more information on costs and how to place a paid ad on these sites.

Paid ads placed on Drive.com.au or the Share Accommodation section of Domain will appear on Cracker, but we also allow free ads to be placed in these categories.

I placed a paid ad on Domain or MyCareer. How do I remove it from Cracker?

Existing ads on Domain and MyCareer can only be removed or edited through those sites. They cannot be removed or edited on the Cracker website.

Any changes to a paid ad on these websites may take up to 48 hours before appearing on Cracker.

Can I place my ad across multiple locations and categories simultaneously?

No, you can select only one category and one location for each ad.

Cracker provides local ads for local communities. We understand that our users want maximum exposure, but flooding the site with multiple ads is not the way to achieve this.

Cracker views duplicate ad postings as a form of Spam and will ban access to those who do so.

How often can I place an ad?

You may place ads on Cracker as often as you like; however every ad must be unique. We do not allow users to place the same or similar ads in more than one category or location at the same time.

If you try to submit an ad that is very similar to an existing one, your ad will not be processed. After removing the first ad, you can place the new ad.

How do I get my ad noticed?

Three easy ways to get your ad noticed are to add an image or video; write funny or outrageous text; or upgrade to a premium ad so your posting appears towards the top of the page. We also recommend checking your text for spelling mistakes and errors prior to submission.

Do not post your ad across multiple locations or categories. Cracker views this as Spam and will delete the ad.

Why can't I post a mobile number in the body of my ad?

Cracker does not allow mobile phone numbers to be published in the body text of ads for fraud protection purposes. If our system detects a mobile number in the body text of your ad when you post it, the ad will not be published. See How do I display a mobile number in my ad? for more information on including mobile numbers in your ad.

How do I display a mobile number as part of my ad?

You can post a mobile number in the ‘Contact Seller’ section of each ad, however all numbers must be validated.

To validate a mobile number, go to your online profile page and select Manage my mobile numbers. Click Add Mobile, type your number into the space provided and then click Insert.

Cracker will send a text message with a unique validation code to your mobile. Once you receive this code, log back into the Manage my mobile section, select Validate and enter the code.

How do I use a different email address in my ad?

For fraud protection purposes, all email addresses must be verified. To validate a new email address, select Manage my email addresses in your online profile. Select Add Email and enter your new email address. Cracker will send a confirmation email to this address; once you click the confirmation link the new email address will be available to use in Cracker ads.

Can I add media (images or video) to my ad?

Yes. Images and videos are one way to draw attention to your ad.

There are two ways to add media to an ad.
  1. When placing a new ad, go to the Add photos/videos section on the ‘Create new ad – Ad details’ page. If you have already uploaded the chosen media into your bucket, click Select from my bucket and select the appropriate image or video. If you are not sure what your bucket is, read What is a bucket?
  2. If you have not yet added the image/video to your bucket you can upload it to the ad directly from your files. Go to Add new media, select the appropriate type and source, then click Browse. Select the file from your computer.
If uploading more than one file for one ad, you can choose one image to be the ‘main image.’ This is the image that will appear on the search results page.

The maximum size for images and videos is 2MB. Images must be saved as JPG, GIF, JPEG or PNG files. Videos must be saved as an AVI, WMV, MPG or MPEG file.

Before adding media to your ad, please ensure it is relevant and that it complies with our Terms and Conditions .

If your media meets the required specifications but you continue to experience difficulties uploading it to your ad, contact us at video@cracker.com.au.

How do I place a link to an external site in my ad? Go to the ‘Add new media’ section of the ‘Create new ad – Ad details’ page. Under ‘Select Source’ choose ‘Link to external media,’ then type the link into the space provided and click Upload.

For more information on adding links to external auction sites, see Can I add a link to an item I am selling on an auction site like eBay? under General Help.

I edited my ad. Why can’t I see the changes?

Changes to your ad will not appear immediately on the Cracker site; sometimes it may take up to 15 minutes for the changes to be processed. If the changes do not appear after 15 minutes, refresh the page. You can do this by holding Control (Ctrl) and pressing the F5 key.

Note that changes to ads placed on MyCareer or Domain may take up to 48 business hours to appear on Cracker.

Ads placed in the Adult category must be approved prior to posting and the review process may take up to 48 business hours.

If you still experience problems, please check that you saved your changes properly before contacting Cracker. You should also check if your Internet Service Provider is experiencing any problems.

I edited my ad but the date stayed the same. Why?

This is intentional: all ads will show the date they were first submitted. We do this to ensure that the ads on our site are up to date. Exceptions to this rule include:

  • Upgrades. Free ads that are upgraded to a premium ad will display the date of the upgrade.
  • Renewing premium ads. Renewed premium ads will show the date it was renewed.
We display our ads according to when they were published, with the most recent ads appearing first. If you placed a free ad, you can always remove it and then republish so it is displayed towards the top of its category.

When will my ad expire?

Free ads expire 14 days after they are first published; premium ads expire 28 days after being published. This is to ensure that Cracker ads remain up to date.

Where is my free or premium ad?

To find a free or premium ad, login to your online profile page. Details about your ads, such as their category, location and region are displayed on this page.

Free ads take approximately 15 minutes to register in our search engine and so will not appear immediately on the Cracker site. All adult ads require approval before being published live on the Cracker website; this process may take up to 48 business hours.

Remember that free ads run for 14 days and premium ads for 28 days. If you cannot find your ad, it may have expired. Your ad may also have been flagged and deleted by the Cracker community. Cracker does not inform users prior to removing their ad due to complaints.

Where is my paid ad?

Ads placed on MyCareer or Domain may take up to 48 hours before they appear on the Cracker website.

Paid ads will only appear on Cracker if they are active on the MyCareer or Domain websites. Check that your paid ad is still active and appears on the MyCareer or Domain website. Note that MyCareer and Domain ads do not run for 28 days and so will not appear on Cracker for that length of time.

Why has my ad been deleted?

There are several reasons your ad may no longer display:
  • It may have expired – free ads expire 14 days after first being published; premium ads expire after 28 days.
  • Your ad may have been illegal, or contravened state rules and regulations on advertising.
  • If multiple users flagged your ad, it may have been deleted or moved to a different category.
  • If you posted similar ads across numerous categories and locations, we may have deleted it. Cracker considers this a form of Spam and will remove all duplicate ads placed by the same user.
  • If one user holds numerous accounts that post identical or near identical ads Cracker will delete these posts.

Can I place an ad anonymously?

Yes. The default setting for all new ads is to withhold the seller’s email address from the public. Alternatively, when placing a new ad, go to the Contact details section and select the Anonymise my email address (Recommended) option.

Cracker highly recommends that all advertisers use the Anonymise Email option to protect their online security. To further protect your anonymity, Cracker recommends using a web-based

Prospective buyers can still contact you through the Cracker website; all enquiries submitted through the Contact Now option will be forwarded to your email account.

Cracker will not disclose your contact details unless legally required. For more information see our Privacy Policy.

How can I prevent buyers from contacting me by email?

If you would prefer not to be contacted by email, go to the Create new Ad – Ad details page, scroll down to the Contact details section and select the No email replies please option.

Why does Cracker charge money for some ads?

Cracker charges for a small number of ads so that we can offer free ads. Free ads can be placed in 90% of Cracker’s classifieds categories; paid ads are available in the remaining 10%.

Some advertisers also prefer paid, premium ads as they receive greater visibility for their products.

How do I contact a seller?

To contact a seller use the ‘Contact Now box’, which is located on the right hand side of every ad.

If the seller has chosen to display their contact details, these will be displayed in the ‘Contact seller’ section, which is also located on the right hand side of every ad. If there are no contact details listed in the ‘Contact seller’ section, this means the seller has chosen not to display their details: to contact them you must use the ‘Contact Now’ box.
