Hi guys,
My youngest son and I are planning a motorbike trip from Sydney to Perth, from Perth; we’re meeting up with my wife and flying off on holidays to Mauritius. After watching, ‘The Long Way Round’ we’ve had this idea to start small, Sydney to Perth, then, a friend wants us to ride North following the coast of Africa but that’s another story and much more planning. I wanted to follow the coast from Sydney, Melbourne and all the way to Perth. Any advice, anybody done this before or anything remotely like this? We’re planning on leaving late next year or early 2008. I’ll be glad to chat with anybody about this.

Yeah, man.. a few years ago, i drove from Melb to Perth on my own. i planned my trip, down to where i would actually fill up petrol. The 1st leg was Melb to Port Augusta (1100km), 2nd was PA to Eucla, 3rd was Eucla to Merredin (about 300km outta Perth), and on the 4th day was the trip into Perth, so i got there about lunch time. I checked all the major petrol station websites for locations of petrol stations, and the type of fuel they sell. They are actually quite common along the way. The camp site i had in Eucla was $2. U get what u pay for. Limestone dust everywhere. Theres also the longest straight in the Australia - the 90mile straight. Not a bend for 146km.. be careful of roadtrains (up to 3 carriages) and carcasses on the road. Trucks will indicate ONCE to let u know u can pass. Be careful they aren't actually turning into a roadhouse. The roads are excellent tho.

So true en4cer. I did the around oz bike trip in '97 on my old zzr600. I think the hardest leg was from Perth to Wyndham (Kimberlies). Try and sort out the seasonal winds that travel down the coast whatever time of the year you go. With a head wind blowing 30 knots for 4 weeks or more you can go through some juice and on that leg, fuel is harder to get to than on the Nullabor. Geez, I envy you guys. You'll have just as much fun as Charlie and wotseesface. Am planning on doing it again in a years time ,but want to go the other way round. Keep in touch and let us all know how it goes.
cheerz

The road between Syd & Melb is very good.
Stop around Eden. Melb to Adel can be wet and windy along the GO Road. SA to Perth-hot.
Take plently of spares and tools.
Having riden around SE Asia, one can never have too many tools and spare tire tubes (but I'll assume you are going tubeless in OZ - so take tire repair kits and good pump, think about a complete spare rear tire). Plently of cable ties, cable, rope for towing. Make sturdy frames for side bags (poor frames will crack with vibration).
What bikes??? This will matter when you are OS for spare parts. Get a tank bag, your back will thank you. Think about a spare fuel container.
Maybe fit a small tube frame when you drop the bike because a roo or emu ran out in front of you! Good washable air filter to stop the sand.

Start writing up a list NOW and gradully add things to the list.
Have fun.

Good for you. You will have a ball!

My wife and I have ridden right around Australia on our BMW R1100RT.

We actually rode the opposite way than what you are intending i.e from Perth to Sydney via the coast.

On a modern bike there is very little to worry about. If your bike will get 300km out of a tank you shouldn't have to worry about extra fuel. The furtherest we found between available fuel stops was 300km and that was up in the Barkley tablelands somewhere between the QLD border and Barkley Homestead from memory. I assume you will be sticking to sealed roads so sands not really a problem either. If you stay off the road from about 2 hours before dusk and don't ride at night you'll greatly reduce your chances of hitting an emu, camel or Roo! We did see some near the road during the day but were never a risk.

Anyway if you have any further questions you want want answered just e-mail me on:
loston2wheels@yahoo.com.au

PS. The ride you are planning is really very tame compared to what you saw on the Long Way Round. That is unless you are intending to travel the inland route through the Simpson desert, Alice Springs, Warburton to Perth. Then you would be wanting to do a lot more planning! If you decide to go that way give me a yell.....I'll probably get a GS and come with you!

Thanks for the info Peaeye, very useful and interesting... I do realise that it's nothing compared to the guys from Long Way Round, they just made me realise that I should be doing something and I guess, I have to start somewhere! The plans have changed a bit since the initial idea. We now want to make the whole journey around Australia. I've planned the first bit, I now need to expand it all the way North and back down to Sydney. I have your e-mail address, I'll definitely be in contact. Thanks again.
