Brisbane (Inner-City) Book Club

In the last few months, I started a book club in Brisbane. So far, we are an interesting, humorous and relaxed group of five.

We generally meet every 3-4 weeks, usually at an inner-city cafe/bar/restaurant on a Monday night to discuss books over wine/coffee/food.

We are flexible and open to reading a variety of genres.

Our first meeting was at Meccah Bah (Emporium, Valley) to discuss Monster Love by Carol Topolski.

Our second meeting was a “night at the movies”. We met at Chez Laila (Portside, Hamilton) to discuss The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory before seeing the film adaptation at the Dendy cinema.

We are next meeting on the night of Monday 12 May to discuss Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.

If you would like to join us, love to read (any genre), meet new friends over coffee/wine/food and are located/work in or around the city, please message me or reply to this thread with your email.

Hi there Gillstar,

I haven't checked responses to this post for a while so I apologise for the late reply. Yes, this book club is still going. We are next meeting at 6.30pm on Monday 11 August 2008 in Fortitude Valley. If you are still interested, let me know your email address and I will send you the details.

On 11 August we will be discussing William Boyd's Restless. At our last meeting on 14 July we discussed The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne and The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett. A couple of new members joined us at our last meet. Because our new members didn't have an opportunity to read these two books (but are reading them now), we will probably revisit our discussion of these books at our next meeting.

I realise three books is probably too much information for a new member but feel free to come along. There's no shame in our group if you haven't had the opportunity to read. We are a fairly casual and good humoured bunch.
