I am a 24 year old american female traveling to sydney for the first time in march of 2008 alone. Just had a few questions like, is it safe to go out at night by myself, are you supposed to tip at a bar or restaurant, are americans looked down upon, what is the weather like around then,
If anyone can answer it would be much appreciated, thank you

The weather in March is great and we here in Australia are a friendly, laid back and honest bunch. Yes, there is crime sadly. Generally though it is safe to go out - word of warning, keep your bag close to your person, - loads of bag snatchers. Hope you have loads of fun.

Shanny.

I am from Washington, DC and I have been living in Sydney & Melbourne for a while now.

It's extra safe . . .

You don't need to tip anyone anywhere.

Watch out for the cabs in Melbourne. The drivers are notorious for screwing everyone.

Please let me know if you need anything else or have other questions. e-Mail to cewhitman at cewhitman dot com.

hey, nah SYdney's pretty safe.. The dodgiest places are probably Redfern and the back streets of Kings Cross.. But other than that you'll be fine.. U don't have to tip at restaurants, its not expected, but if u do go to a nice establishment then its nice if u do..

There are some real good clubs, if thats what ur into.. Some cool places to check out are

HEaps of the tourist attractions are expensive and a bit over-rated.. My advice - don't go to the zoo, its super expensive and not that great, if you've ever been to a zoo then you've probably seen it all.. And u can't hold a koala there..

Some things that are free are - u can walk through the royal botanic gardens (in the domain) its real pretty and right on the harbour, go to darling harbour its expensive but has heaps of restaurants and an imax theatre and clubs, theres circular quay where u can catch a ferry to all parts of sydney - go to manly for a day on the ferry. There are markets: Glebe markets on a saturday and bondi markets on a sunday at bondi public school, theres The Rocks markets too but theyre just full of expensive asian tourist australia junk, the other two have real arts and crafts and fashion and all that..
Go out to the Blue Mtns on the train one day and go see the 3 sisters - its a bush walk - really pretty..

China Town is fun, well good for yum cha.. U can go see the Opera House.
If ur into museums or galleries the Museum of Contemporary Art is a really good one, its just near The ROcks, the Powerhouse museum is full of science and technology but to be honest its expensive and not that great, the Maritime Museum is way better its full of boats and all that, theres the Australian museum and the museum of sydney as well but i haven't been to them in yrs..

Sydney can be expensive or cheap.. The aquarium is good - its expensive - Oceanworld at Manly is good too.. U can dive with sharks there - its like 200 bucks or there abouts though..

anyway hope u have a great trip. march is a funny time of year, its still warm but starts to get cool at night.. it will still be warm enough to swim though..

If u have a student card, or international student card then definitly bring it cauz u will get discounts at museums and the movies and all that..

peace

Sydney is a great place to go out on the town. better with mates though prob safer also. (if you staying at backpackers you will find no shortage of people to go see the city sights with.)

The weather that time of year is still starting to cool down. Though you will still get those really hot humid days.

I guess common sense prevails (stay out of dark alleys) I personally think the wildlife is more dangerous than the Aussie men, especially them drop bears (sic).

Oh we do have issues with losers placing drugs in your drink when you aren't looking. So never leave your drink unattended or uncovered. all she'll be right mate..

You are a funny gal. We love Americans, Except for those loud obnoxious overbearing ones.

Hi,

I am also a 24 year old American woman traveling by myself in Sydney during March 2008. I will be there from March 1 until March 10. I am planning on taking a Blue Mountain tour on one day but have no plans for the rest of the time. If you are interested in a meet up, let me know!

Hi - it is looking likely I will also be travelling alone to Sydney in March/April this year! I have booked my flights to visit a friend who is currently living there but she now has a fab job opportunity in Melbourne so will be to-ing and fro-ing a lot so I think I will be pretty much left to fend for myself! Any tips on any buddy-up type forums in existence or good websites to help me plan my adventures? Any help greatly appreciated as it was not my intention to be going solo!

Thank you xx
