i dont know why but out 8yr old male cat is losing all his fur on his belly and partially on his hind legs. we find him cleaning himself and it appears as though he is actually pulling the fur out for some reason. we have never seen this before. any suggestions....

Hi
My cat did that last year and I blamed it on stress due to building outside our house. She used to have big furballs too and seemed so unhappy. Upon taking her to the vet after trying everything I could come up with..it was a flea allergy..she only had to be bitten by a flea and the itching started then the scratching etc..when they have an allergy it feels hot and itchy so they pull at their fur and lick a lot. Cortisone, capstar, antibiotics and Advantage (fortnightly after that) got it under control. She is indoor only and we had never seen a flea, but obviously they are in the environment waiting to bite a poor unsuspecting pet.

There could be a number of reasons for your cat to be losing his hair such as diet, environmental, age and stress.

Try this site www.listnow.com/helpingpaws/articles/article_295.html

If it gets worse such as sores showing up take your moggy to the vet for a complete overhaul.

hope this helps

lol, Don't worry, I do see the funny side of your post!!!! Just to let you know, we lost our cat, Baghera, in July last year, he overcame his baldness too. We feel it was a stress thing as my mum had turned up with her three dogs and it worsened and then improved as soon as they left again. We had been having trouble in our local town with peple trapping and baiting our feline friends. He was always inside during the night and usually asleep inside during the day. He only ever went out to do a pee or other bits. He just didn't come home which is very out of the ordinary for him. The kids were very stressed, as were we, and we all still check at night and call him just in case. It was terrible. Who knows, he could show up one day, but judging by his age, I doubt it. We tried to replace him, but it just wasn't the same. We got a pure bred Himalayan male, he was cool but it just wasn't the same. We used frontline and advantage on him, but on the day he was due for another dose, he disappeared too. We found him 2 days later with a paralasis tick and it was too late. We took him to our vet, but as he drew up the syrum we lost him. Too sad, don't want any more, but my brother insists on getting us one as they have always been an important part of our childrens lives. He says the house is not the same without a cat to cuddle. What do you guys think, should we get another?

this cat is a member of our family, there is no way i wouldnt take him to the vet. it was the 1st thing i did. the vet is unsure what it is, she has given him a cortisone injection, it is not worms as he is always up to date. she has inspected his diet and cant find anything wrong with it, it is actually very good, he also eats peas, celery, brocolli, lettuce etc. she has given him 3 mths to respond to the injection otherwise he will need behaviour modification injections to stop it or at least try to. the vet says it is a form of obsessive compulsivness, so my gosh my cat may need a shrink. i am looking really for some unusual suggestions that we wouldnt think of. the cvet said that the way he has over groomed himself makes him look as though he had an op about 10 days previous with the hair starting to grow back but then he grooms again and it doesnt change. i am, interested in this hormonal thing, so will try to look it up, thanks. keep the ideas coming.
