I am having so much trouble trying to get Spock to stop digging a hole into next door they have a german shepherd which is very gentle and friendly and all Spock wants to do is play with him! We have apologise numerous times to next door and its quite embarrassing!

So I have tried everyting like barricade the walkway down the side where he digs but he jumps on it along the way and manages to get over!! its same with higher barricade still no go! we put bricks under neath the surface between the ground and fence still no go as he picks them up!!! I have given him commands and still won't listen.. He is usually good on other stuff like toilet training in one area etc and He has Jabba - his brother - with him he won't play with Jabba he prefers the German Shepherd!!

PLS HELP!!!

Thanks
Pinkbug on the verge of disaster!!

Try putting his poop in the hole then cover it over...this only helps if he digs in the same spot. Also try sprinkling the area heavily with white pepper as the do not like it. Or try the bury the inflated balloon in the hole trick...so when he digs there it will pop and scare him. Good Luck!

Your post came up when I did a google search for exactly this problem. I have to German Shepherd Dogs and one of them (Molly) prefers to seek out the 2 labs on one side and the other is tunneling to the new lab on the other side. We have put stone all along the back fence (first digging a trench and lining with plastic), as that neighbor had a cat and REALLY hated the "visits", especially when the blind dog fell in their pool. I really don't want to use stone everyhere, but I will if I have to. The thing is that they are good, obedient dogs for everything else. Molly waits until I'm not watching and then goes to town. I found 3 new holes this evening! It's infuriating!

Hmmm nice idea with the balloon but problem is i have another dog i wouldn't want to scare him!!! He is the good one as usually when Spock digs and goes in next doors backyard Jabba doesn't follow he knows its bad to do that so I am like SPOCK listen to him! oh god!

I have heard of another remedy... not sure but chili powder??? or something like that.... not sure if it'll work!

At the moment its heavily barricaded and he hasn't been there today.. as usually happens about 3 4 times a day like the other day he had escaped to the front via next door's hole to the front yard and we found him so comfortable in his old baby bed in the garage i must have locked him in there... SOMEHOW! I thought hmm he is smart enough not to go anywhere but stay around the house no matter where... thats one step from doing good thing and now we gotta focus on next step NO MORE DIGGING..

I had this idea of making a wee sandpit with LOTS of Dirt in it and make it their digging ground only Might work?!?!

Thank you so much for your idea for chicken wire.. We have a large area and they dig here and there... the size i can say is ummm.. one swimming pool on front area but on the side its where you can put a decking or pergola so it is a big area... also i am worried if i do the wire thingy I have a toddler daughter who is constantly outside on the playground set we have at home.. we have resorted to putting bricks in the ground between the fence sometimes it stops them sometimes they don't give up and pick it up with their teeth!! and manage to get under! drives me nuts

I was talking with my neighbour the one with spock wanting to play with their dog.. said same problem with hers to next door (we live on a new estate a building estate it is only 3 years old land...) so the fences are not into the ground like the old days so we have some gaps in between ground and fence which is why it is so easy for them to dig a bit and get under! MAYBE i will have to call DR harry to come over!! hehe!

I will see what i can do with the wire and find a way so my daughter doesn't get hurt and same goes for the dogs!!

But THANK you so much for your suggestions!! my fingers are crossed!

To stop my dog digging in their kennel run I bought some chicken wire, the green one with big enough holes for the grass to still grow through it and laided it across the whole kennel run securing it with steel tent pegs which u can get at bunnings or a camping shop they only cost 30cents each.. it stops them digging, I dont know how large the area u would have to cover??
